I remember going to Rocky Mountain NP during the peak of the elk rut. There was one field that was just full of them. Around the field are warning signs to not get any closer due to risk of bull elk charging.

Naturally, some guy had to get closer. The nearest elk just stomped a few times but didn’t charge thankfully.

Best part a ranger saw the whole thing and was waiting for him. This was in the olden times of film cameras. They made him finish the roll, give it to the ranger, and they told him they would develop the film and send him all the pictures that weren’t taken from the field (along with his ticket).

Since then I’ve seen a similar situation and they made the person show them the pictures being deleted and now they can just print the ticket in their car. How convenient!

There was an issue for a while about protests about tourists and how people were charging excessive amounts for property to tourists that local couldn’t afford the rent to get on the property ladder in their home town. That was around Barcelona and Northern Spain.

We tend to banter about the French a lot (if it’s English-French, the talk is of the Germans, if it’s English-German the talk is over the French, if it’s English-Portugal it’s the Spanish, etc...), it’s about each others neighbours, but there is one group that unites even the most hardened German, French, British, etc... into coming together, and that is the French Canadian tourist. If you get into an argument with a foreign national and it gets heated, bring up French Canadian tourists (Canadian tourists are great, probably the best, but French Canadian, waw), and before you know it your sharing a table and talking over a few glasses of cerveza.

When were were there last, we were on a small dirt side road and a Prius ahead of us was rolling VERY slowly alongside a bison, even stopping to take pictures through open windows. The top of its back was higher than the roof of the Prius. The bison, for its part, was walking very slowly alongside the road for no apparent reason - there was only open space in every direction. Once they moved on, we weren’t sure what to do in our rental Nissan Versa. Eventually we passed by it with two wheels off the other side of the road, without going so fast as to scare it, but quick enough to avoid giving it much time to do anything. My wife took this picture by sheer luck through the CLOSED WINDOW of our car:

When I was in Jackson for the Jeep thing I did I had a talk with the driver of the shuttle van and he told me a couple of interesting things about bison:

1. You wouldn’t believe how fast they can sprint and how high they can jump. 4 foot fence? Standing leap over it.

2. They are dicks, they sometimes ran cars for no reason at all. His van had been rammed twice...while driving 50

3. The locals hate them for the above 2 reasons.

Yeah, yikes. It was cool to see it but I was on guard behind the wheel of my little white Versa. We didn’t want to hang around next to it.

Crazy stuff. Also Jackson is one of my favorite places I’ve ever been, but it turns out that others have also discovered it and prices reflect that.
